The Alternator is used to charge your cars battery and run its electrical system, when the engine is running. The Alternator is driven by a belt and when the engine is running the crankshaft turns a number of components including the alternator. The alternator will spins up 3 times faster than the crankshaft.
When your alternator is working properly, your battery should remain charged, provided your battery is in good shape. If you try start your car and you hear a slight crank but there is not enough power to turn the engine over, your battery could be run down. If you manage to jump start your vehicle, it could be that your alternator is not working. Both the alternator and battery should both be checked. Newer vehicles have alternators which have a voltage regulator built in. This keeps the alternator putting out a contant and consistant voltage level.
